SAM SHORTLINE RAILROAD
Discover a unique journey through Georgia's rich history and picturesque landscapes aboard the SAM Shortline Railroad. Experience a step back in time with a period feel, presidential history, and scenic views.
The SAM Shortline Railroad offers a captivating diesel-powered excursion that recreates the feel of the 1950s. Managed by the Southwest Georgia Railroad Excursion Authority under Georgia State Parks, this heritage train travels approximately 45 miles between Cordele and Archery, Georgia. The Heart of Georgia Railroad provides the powerful locomotives and experienced operating crews, ensuring an authentic and memorable experience for all passengers.
Ideal for families, history buffs, and train enthusiasts, the SAM Shortline links charming towns like Cordele, Leslie, Americus, and Plains. The route is steeped in history, tracing its origins back to the Savannah, Americus and Montgomery Railway, chartered in 1884. A significant highlight is the 1888 depot at Plains, which served as the headquarters for Jimmy Carter's successful 1976 presidential campaign. Just nearby in Archery, you'll find the Archery depot, standing proudly beside the Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm, adding a unique presidential connection to your journey.
The SAM Shortline's rails tell a story that began with the narrow-gauge Americus, Preston and Lumpkin Railroad in 1884, reorganized as the SA&M in 1888. This route later became part of the Seaboard Air Line, offering passenger service between Savannah and Montgomery until 1951. After a period of decline, the State of Georgia acquired the line in 1999, establishing the Heart of Georgia Railroad to manage its operations. Today, the heritage train, run in partnership with the Southwest Georgia Railroad Excursion Authority, offers a chance to experience this enduring legacy firsthand, connecting passengers with significant historical sites and the beauty of Georgia.
