FINGER LAKES RAIL EXPERIENCE
The Finger Lakes Rail Experience — or FLX Rail Experience — is a new heritage-tourism operation launched in Summer 2025 on the Finger Lakes Railway network in central New York.
It's a collaboration between the freight short line Finger Lakes Railway, FMW Solutions, the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey, Operation Toy Train, Seneca Lakes Wine Train, and more than a dozen local wineries and breweries. After selling its small coach fleet in December 2024, the railway said it remained committed to fostering regional tourism and sought new ways to leverage its 167-mile network, bringing in FMW to lead the passenger side. It is independently owned and operated — FGLK provides the rail infrastructure and track, while FLX operates its own vintage cars, schedules, and ticketing.
Departing from Waterloo, Canandaigua, Geneva and Seneca Falls, the trains run through Ontario, Seneca, Yates and Cayuga counties in restored 1940s-era passenger cars from the Golden Era of railroading, with restrooms, air conditioning and modern amenities, including five URHS cars like the famous New York Central round-end observation Hickory Creek. The program was prototyped as weekend service from July 4th to the end of August offering family trains, wine trains, evening club trains and brunch trains, and has since expanded to year-round sightseeing, sunset, fall foliage, and holiday rides.
A good example is the Lakeside Limited — a relaxed, family-friendly two-hour round trip from Waterloo designed as an easygoing alternative to the evening premium experiences, focused on comfortable seating, scenic views and time together rolling through Finger Lakes farmland, with Deluxe Coach seating and drinks and light refreshments for purchase onboard.
